West 39th Street is a residential development in the Westport neighborhood of Kansas City, a dynamic, walkable neighborhood near the University of Kansas Medical Center. The project responds to its dense urban context with a design that prioritizes scale, materiality, and spatial layering. The four-story structure sits above a 1.5-level basement garage, negotiating a steeply sloped site while still meeting accessibility requirements. Its exterior blends brick and stucco veneer, offering durability while referencing the texture and tone of surrounding historic architecture. This refined material palette bridges traditional and modern aesthetics, giving the building a strong but contextual street presence.
The architecture creates layered transitions between public and private space through a series of outdoor zones, culminating in a landscaped plaza with lounge seating, a grilling kitchen, and a bocce ball court. Unit interiors feature 11-foot ceilings on the ground floor, open layouts, and high-end finishes like granite countertops.
Designed for young professionals, West 39th Street balances urban density with thoughtful spatial organization, delivering a modern residential experience that is deeply rooted in its neighborhood fabric.
